Evelyn Banks Mitchell

5/31/1939 - 10/19/2001


Evelyn R. Banks Mitchell, born May 31, 1939, ascended into glory on Friday, October 19, 2001 at Park Plaza Hospital, Houston, Texas, after an extended illness.

Mrs. Mitchell was born in Fulshear,Texas to the late Kermit Banks and Mattie M. Davis Banks. She was a graduate of the Houston Independent School District. She graduated from Phillis Wheatley Senior High School in 1958, and remained an active, loyal “Wheatleyite” even through her illness. She became an entrepreneur as a graduate of Prairie View A & M College in Houston, Texas. She also attended the University of Houston, and Franklin Beauty College of Houston, Texas.

Having been a successful cosmetologist for years and an integral part of the family business of Frazier- Mitchell Funeral Service since its inception in the early1970’s, she decided to broaden her horizons even more. She enrolled and graduated from Commonwealth College of Mortuary Sciences in 1994. She successfully passed her licensing board exam to become a licensed Funeral Director in the same year.

Mrs. Mitchell was often requested to utilize her many talents in the numerous organizations of which she was affiliated. It was know that if you needed a job performed in a professionally, timely manner, she was the person to ask to take the helm.

She served as President of the Independent Funeral Directors & Morticians Association (I.F.D. &M.A.); Women’s Auxiliary of Houston, Texas; President of Women’s Inc. of Houston; Recording Secretary of I.F.D. & M.A. of Texas;a member of the City Wide Beautician’s Association of Houston; a member of the Court of Calanthe of Texas Dixon Court # 46 (presently# 102). She also served on the Board of Directors of G.M.S. and the Board of Directors of Crawford and Associates. She was a bridal consultant, interior designer, and seamstress. Mrs. Mitchell was chosen among the “Outstanding Women of Houston” by the National Council of Negro Women. She was owner and operator of Caprice Hair Fashions of Houston, as well as co-owner of Frazier-Mitchell Funeral Service of Houston, Texas.

Not only was she active in numerous organizations, she would willingly serve as a prayer partner ,fervent bible study partner, and often designated leader, a friend when one felt friendless, a confidant an advisor when one needed an open ear, caring heart, and a nonjudgmental opinion based on God’s teachings. To speak to God or the bible was an open invitation to her to gleefully talk about, question you and/or discuss God’s Word and His works.
